For the first eighteen years of her life, Manuela had lived on three different continents, and four different countries. Being a Kenyan, Swiss, and Canadian it wasn’t until she lived in the Bahamas during her high school years, that she even considered becoming a musician. Diving deep into all things musical she taught herself how to play the guitar and piano and began singing and leading services at her church. It was there in 2003 that she recorded and released her first EP “Some Kind of Wonderful.”
Several years later and with a move back to Canada, Manuela found herself in the middle of the Canadian Prairies attending college and slowly discovering and sinking deeper into the sounds of old soul and contemporary jazz pop. This birthed the beginning of a new musical sound for Manuela and with this new sound came the release of “The Love EP” in 2008, which was debuted to a packed house at the CD release garnering great local success. Shortly following this release she moved to Vancouver immersing herself in the music scene as a solo artist. Getting the attention of some prominent singer-songwriter venues Manuela was able to hone her performance skills with numerous live shows and begin to deeper define the sound that is her own.
Without taking away from the beauty of her lyrical themes, it’s the music that really makes Manuela stand out as an emerging artist. Embracing the spirit of old soul and present musical mentors like John Mayer, and Corinne Bailey Rae, Manuela has the ability to take her influences and effortlessly reinvent them into her own unique style. With the release of her first full-length album “A Different Kind of Fire,” released on her own Independent label, Golden Recordings, and already a Western Canadian tour to the 2010 Winter Olympics under her belt thiscoming year will surely see great things from this artist.
